Turn Out the Lights
scifi, interactive fiction
the text adventure turn out the lights is lovingly short and atmospheric, set during the last few days of a failed corporate venture in outer space.
The Girl Without Hands, 2016
animated fantasy film
the girl without hands is a dreamlike film based on the grimm fairytale of the same name, animated entirely by one person. a miller is tricked by the devil into giving him his daughter; as the mill is gifted with liquid gold and eternal riches, the girl escapes the devil and her father at the cost of her own hands. the minimal animation and often completely still scenes are never to the film's detriment—i actually got a little sad when i realized it was ending, so soon after the one hour mark! i was also excited by the inclusion of a medieval beekeeper outfit and medieval watering can.
Mineral Hall, Louie Zong
funk, dungeon synth album
i've been listening to louie zong's mineral hall.
i don't know why it took me so long to watch the flavor of green tea over rice when it's one of my favorite meals. the film is a glimpse into the high society life of 1950s tokyo, and i was surprised by how contemporary the characters felt, particularly the women (i need to watch more pre-60s movies!).
Piranesi, Susanna Clarke
mystery, fantasy novel
the novel piranesi takes place in a labyrinthine house, filled with seemingly endless rooms of classical statues, columns, and vestibules; grand, marble staircases that descend into a gentle ocean; seabirds that nest among the tall window sills. filled to the brim with descriptions that evoke an incredibly tangible, surreal space; i'm mad that none of the covers seem to feature the actual house! a quick read that had me absorbed by the horrors and wonders of an impossible piece of architecture.
