i hope your new year is kind. thanks, as always, for reading đŸ„‚

Film

  • Misericordia (MisĂ©ricorde), 2024did a full jaw drop like three distinct times lmao. pressed play without knowing anything about this, which was a great choice! some real nail-biting stuff.
Drama, thriller, comedy. Jérémie returns to his hometown for the village baker's funeral.
  • Flow (Straume), 2024this didn't deeply move me like i thought it might, but that's fine. really lovely sound design, especially the patter of rain on foliage. in another world this would be an awards darling indie game.
Animation, fantasy, adventure. A great flood brings a cat, capybara, lemur, Labrador, and secretarybird together on a single sailboat.

Books

  • Victorian Psycho, Virginia Feitosurprisingly appropriate for the holiday season. there's really nothing new being explored here (victorians hated women! whoa!), though its odd descriptions and unique metaphors make this a fresh and quick read. a definite you'll either like it or you won't book. i had a fun time.
Historical fiction, comedic, horror. A new governess arrives at Ensor House. In three months, everyone will be dead.

Articles & essays

  • Fran Sans Essay, Emily Sneddoni love fonts!!!!!!!!
  • Performing Peter: South of the Circle and Fuzzy Choice, Hannah Nicklin"Choice isn’t just about the switches we set in a game system (what choice does); it is also something that a player does. The act of choosing allows players to perform a character: to inhabit the space between the score/script, and the performance of it. When choosing becomes an act of performance, we – as designers – are producing a shared space of pretend: a suspended disbelief explored by (inter)play of option and selection."
